How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?


Lab Grown Diamonds are produced under the same conditions that mined diamonds experience, the only difference is that the process takes place in a lab rather than deep within the earth. Geology teaches us that most natural diamonds were formed between 1-3 billion years ago. Carbon dioxide trapped beneath the ground was exposed to vast heat and pressure; compacting and rearranging the carbon atoms into the structures we know of as diamonds.

Later, tectonic and volcanic activity shifted these stones around, bringing them closer to the surface where humans could access them.

Today there are two main successful processes in which lab-grown diamonds are produced:
High Pressure – High Temperature (HPHT):

High Pressure Hight Temperature (HPHT) is a method invented in the 1950s where diamonds can be produced from scratch in a controlled environment. This method can also enhance natural diamonds’ color to make them brighter, from a yellowish diamond to a colorless one.

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD):

Created in the 1980s, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) is a more recent diamond growing technique during which a gemstone is grown from a hydrocarbon gas mixture, imitating how diamonds form in interstellar gas clouds.

Both methods can produce high quality lab grown diamonds, with excellent color and clarity.

The safest way to verify if a diamond is CVD or HPHT is to check the original certificate’s comment section. Here it will mention if it is CVD or HPHT, as grown or if there are indications of post-growth treatment.
